Local From Start To Finish

Bulk Pricing & Payment

We sell our beef to our direct customers prior to the beef being butchered. We partner with our local meat lockers that process the beef into specialized cuts of your choice.

Our current price is listed in “Shop Local” page and is calculated based on the “hanging weight” at the locker.

(When does your price change?- See FAQs)

What is hanging weight? The hanging weight is approximately 63% of the live weight. We raise our beef to a live weight of 1200-1300 lbs.

Review our FAQs for further details on hanging weight.

After you have reserved your beef & paid your down payment we will contact you to secure your butchering date.

After your butchering date arrives, we receive the hanging weight amount from the meat locker. You will then receive an email with an invoice of your remaining balance and payment options.

The invoice balance will need to be received by S & J Farms prior to your beef being picked up from the meat locker.

Payment for processing the meat is in addition to the beef price and can vary by the cuts, specialty products and grinding chosen. On average, processing for 1/4 (1/2 of a 1/2) of beef can range from $190-$250. Payment for processing is due directly to the locker when you pick up your beef.

A little more information on take home meat… How much meat do you get to take home? Approximately 60-65% of the hanging weight will be the amount of packaged meat with your name on it ready to go home to your freezer. (1/8 of Beef will be in the range of 55%-65% due to standard processing/grinding)

Buying in bulk is a cost-effective way to secure your meat supply and give you a great selection of beef cuts. The best part is you know how and where it was raised!

See our FAQs page for how we process the beef we get for our family.

Our Cows & Calves

Our herd is built on the Angus breed and crossed with Hereford and Simmental genetics. Grazing pasture and cornstalks are the primary source of feed for our cows in the months of May through December. We supplement year-round with mineral & nutrient rich lick tubs to keep our herd healthy & strong. During the months that we are not able to graze, our cows enjoy a ration of alfalfa, grass & corn silage.

Our calves are given an ID tag at birth and we can easily match them up to their mother to trace their lineage. After weaning we choose our top heifers to become replacements for our seasoned cows. The remaining heifers and steers are raised for market beef. They receive meals of corn, corn silage, alfalfa and grass hay. Our calves are raised without added hormones.

We treat our cows and calves like we would our daughter. If she is sick, we give her the appropriate medicine and other supportive treatments to make her well. The same goes for our sick animals, if they are sick we support them back to health.
